Titian to Canaletto & Jenny Saville @ the Ashmolean

(Not my images)

Without a single doubt, the pencil, charcoal and ink drawings by the famous Italian artists were incredible. I have seen similar drawings at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence during the summer, but the collection at the Ashmolean was a lot more abundant.

The exhibition also included a contemporary response from Jenny Saville.

Thoughts:

Drawing is at the base of any art education, though it seems to me that the value and use of drawing has changed over time.

Titian and Canaletto's drawings being more of an observation of the era and Saville's drawings being an emotional response to an observation... surely this is also applicable to work made in any other medium? Whatthen makes a drawing 'a drawing'?
